I recently viewed an article on Uptown. One post that really caught my attention was when a woman was skeptical about moving from Rogers Park into Uptown. Her and her boyfriend found interest in a condo that they are taking into consideration into buying. So, I would like to analyze how Uptown is percieved. Uptown is known for its bad ways. Shooting, violence, killing but, let's face the facts. Violence is everywhere within Chicago. It's something that many people just settle for because there's no stop to it. But, Uptown is an misunderstood neighborhood. I used to live in Uptown and so it's more of an environment where, you have to be wise as to where you fit in. Safety should be an issue entering any type of area that you are new too. I honestly feel that Uptown isn't a bad neighborhood as long as you do what you have to do. Focusing on what's right for you. Uptown tries to come together and prove to everyone that violence isn't the only thing that may occur in that area. I stand strong with my community, and like anything that you may encounter or come across...it's what you make of it !
Here's the link to the article post that I referred to ! ;

I absolutely agree that Uptown is a misunderstood neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteI like that you defend Uptown even though you might not live there anymore. I am not from Rogers Park, but it is my home for the last 11 years. In a sense it is my neighborhood -- I get my coffee there, I am a patron of the restaurants, I have friends who have shops there, and I have been to many of the parks for movies, soccer games, etc.
There is violence in Rogers Park (I'm not sure if you heard about the man that was killed as part of a gang initiation task the other day...), and there are gangs there, too. It doesn't always get thrown out into the limelight like Uptown does, but it used to.
People didn't want to live in Rogers Park a few years ago, and to me that's crazy. Yes, there is violence, but you have to be aware of your surroundings. You have to report crime, and you have to hold police accountable to do the right thing. I think there are many other things that can prevent violence, and unfortunately violence exists everywhere. But I used to have to explain this to people all the time.
