I know that I have experienced random acts of kindness before...and many of them have been like the one's you've mentioned. I want to talk about being on the giving side of paying it forward.
One day I was on the train on the way to work, and I had a sandwich, a fye sandwich that my boyfriend brought home from work for me, and I was kind of looking forward to it. But then this woman got on the train, and she was asking for food. Not money like I've seen a lot of other people do. I got to thinking that she was probably pretty hungry. She was also with a her daughter who was a toddler. So I decided to give her my sandwich and I would just buy a lunch later.
When I gave it to the woman, she opened it right away and gave half of it to her daughter. The part that really hit me was that the little girl yelled to me as I was leaving the train, "THANK YOU!!" and the woman was grateful. It made me tear up a little because I know that I made at least that part of their day a little easier. I don't have any idea how long it would have been until they would have been able to get food or where they would have gotten it from if they were desperate enough. The little girl's thanks just re-enforced the fact that I know I did the right thing. In some ways, "paying it forward" is just a little bit selfish because the thing that I like getting in return is just knowing I'm a good person and someone who does what's right.
