Major Blog Post: Teen Pregnacy

Teen Pregnancy

Teen pregnancy is important to me because I think society doesn’t really pay enough attention to it or preventing it. I believe that there could be more ways that teens are educated about sex because we as young women need to know how to protect ourselves. I chose this topic because I have close friends who are teen moms and I see their struggles. My Mother herself was a teen mom when she had her first child which was me. She had me when she was 16. My mom was an example of a good parent at a young age. Providing, and guiding me because she knew she had a responsibility. Not only providing for me but being an actual mother figure and loving me.

I found an article that was interesting to me because teen pregnancy rates have actually declined over the past few decades. United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate of the western industrialized world. The teen pregnancy and birth rate was much higher prior to 1980 especially in the 1950’s and 1960’s but at the time young women were getting married and having children before the age of twenty. It really didn’t change what I thought at first, but it made me realize that a lot of things change from then.

The high rate of childbearing in the United States matters because it is a marker of a social problem, rather than the underlying social problem itself.
The importance of educating on teen pregnancy: Culture in the Western world has changed, and with the social dynamic that governs what is acceptable and what is not. One of the changes is in the area of pregnancy. At one time anyone having babies after their teens would have been thought old. These days, teens are supposed to remain childless and are deemed by society.

I spoke with Alex Backis Therapist at Uplift  Community High school. Alex Backis says society pays enough attention to teen pregnancy but believes they could pay more attention on how to prevent teen pregnancy from happening. I asked her do she think teen moms are judged she said “yes”. She also said their parents may be disappointed in some cases or even happy it depends. Alex also said teen pregnancy rates may be so high because there schools doesn’t educate them about sex,  and they do not have access to birth control or condoms and girls just want something to love.
