I believe it's important to have a positve body image.
Girls all around the world feel less than perfect when no one really
knows the definition of perfect because everyone likes different things
Who said long hair is beauty?
A preson with short hair or long hair?
Who said you stop being pretty after you weigh 105lb?
A preson who weigh 100lb or a person who weigh 400lb?
Who said a girl without make-up isn't beauty?
A preson with all the Mac on or the bare faced person?
I can go on & on all day with this list, but the point im trying
to make is you can't decide what beauty is based on what others say.

Zimmerman was charged last week with second degree murder. I don't know what took so long personally. The lack of an arrest in the shooting inspired weeks of protests nationwide.
My heart-felt condolence goes out to the family & friends of Trayvon Martain.
Only i a prefect world violence doesn't  exist.
Only in our world 17 year old boys lives are takin because they look a certain way.
Only in a prefect world it's peace clouds & happy rainbows.
I wish i lived in that world!

women in the media

i feel like in the media women are portrayed very negatively ,and i feel like we as women deserve more respect from society than we recieve now. to me women are to often disrespected in the media which make men think it is ok to do the same. i think if people started either to not watch and listen to things that disrespect us it wouldnt necessarily stop it from being shown but it will kinda change things for the better.if we stand up more for the things that mispresent us than they can possibly be changed.

About me

My name is Ta`Keyah i am in girl world 2.0 i am not really into blogging because i`d rather discuss the problems that are going on around us.
i learn that you can learn about alot of stuff in girl world you can make friends & we end up lernding about how alot of young girls and women in how they go on in there relationship & how they let there boyfriends treat them and whats good and not good for them in there relationship.

The End Of Girl World 2.0

Tomorrow April 16, 2012 is the last day of girl world 2.0 and I am going to explain what girl world is about to the other after school matters programs. I am telling everyone that girl world 2.0 this period was a group blog and that means that everyone even our bosses were able to blog on one page and say what they were feeling about what ever was going on in our society. I am so what upset that girl world is ending but I am looking forward to starting our spring extension beginning April 24th.

Why did i come to Girl World 2.0

I decided to come back to girl world 2.0 because I knew cassandra and I felt comfortable around her. I also need the extra money in my pocket so I can help my mom out with things. my mom is a single mom that just graduated with her bachlor degree and she is now trying to find another job. I am very proud of her I really take the time out to help her.

Geminis

Hello my name is Ariel Wise and I am a gemini and I would like to say a few things about geminis.

 - The air of Gemini is always changing direction
 - The 3rd sign of the zodiac
 - The sign of Gemini is thought to be very adaptable and flexible, sometimes to the point of "being" two different personalities
 - With the Sun in Gemini, the urge for self-expression is strong
 - Solar Geminis are flexible and changeable people
 - Their ability to adapt quickly to new situations generally gains them plenty of friends and social contacts

I Joined....

I Joined Girl world 2.0 because I heard about it from a friend and I heard it was every fun. When I joined girl world i started to like it and i continue to come I always came to get paid, it seem like a little job.

Girl World 2.0

I am Ariel and I am apart of girl world 2.0 . This is my second time being in girl world and I am very happy to be apart of girl world because I have became closer to the other girls and I have been able to say what I feel about the subjects that we are talking about. I have found blogging as a group better than blogging alone because I feel as if the way everyone thinks comes together on one page, and I think that when people thinks different one one person has to say it on their own page and it might not be seen. I also really enjoy being apart of a group were I feel that everyone is comfortable being around me and the other members in my group. I have came to understand what is needed from me and how I can say what I feel without saying in a way that people feel that I am being rude. Girl world 2.0 has became more than just a after school program for me.
So i found out that Scorpios are the best out of the zodiac sign and I'm one so were the best.!!!!!!!
i wont someone who will always going to be there for me nomatter what justlike as if we were marred.
when you have a good relationship and you know thats things are heard for you a good man or women they cant fixit for you but they can help you not face them alone..

Boyfriend i want

I want a Asian,Chinese,Koren,or Japanese boyfriend i think they are so cute and that are very smart.

Generations

In my generation it seems as if the important things in life are the things that you pay for. Everybody have on the same thing and if you don't than you aren't known as "hood rich" and to be hood rich is to have the right hair, clothes, shoes, and even additude. People in my generation are known by just the way the way they keep the their hair, nail, and makeup done. People that look at them feels as if they are to be looked up to. Everyone wants to be in the hood rich group even though it's not important some how it became important. My generation don't understand that long weave and the new nikes don't make you who you are. I'll admit that I also like the nice things that life have to give, but I don't have everything that people would feel is the best things to have. I also know what's like to be in the spot of having everything. I saw what's like so I told myself that's not the way I wanted to live. I wanted people to see me for me and not for the things I have on. I have limited myself to everything I buy and wear because there is more to me than what I have on. I know that others only have to go off of what they have on, but that's not the case for everybody. I have came to understand that the way I was living ( hood rich) isn't for everybody for the simple fact that money is being wasted and it can be used for so much more in life. I still keep myself up but I have came to understand my limit and I love the way I live without worrying about getting the new shoes so that people still think that I'm hood rich.

Shooting Of Trayvon Martin

The shooting of Trayvon Martin has taken a strong hold on a lot of people lives. This means young childern, teenagers, young adults, and older people. He was killed on February 26, 2012 but it didn't get out until a mouth later. He was a seventeen year old male who was talking on the phone with his girlfriend, and walking down the street when George Zimmerman started to follow him. Zimmerman called the plice to tell them that he saw a young man who looked as if he was up to no good, but the police told him that they didn't need him to follow young Trayvon. He did so anyway then that's when things began to happen. Trayvon was unarmed, and his girlfried told the police that Zimmerman was following he said that he was going to put his hood on and he was going to walk faster. She says that she told him to ran but he told her that he wasn't going to ran. She then say that he was pushed because she heard the phone drop. A woman then called the police to say that there was a voice out side yelling for help but she was to scared to open the door and see what was going on. While on the phone with the police you could hear everything going on in the background, and little did Zimmerman know she was still on the phone with the police after the shooting. Trayvon was found face down and shot in the chest with his hands under his body. When the police arrived Zimmerman told them that he was attacked by Trayvon and he did what he had to do to stay alive. He told the police that he broke his nose and had a wound in the back of his head. The police took him into custody and after a few hours of questioning they let him go. They said that they didn't have anything to hold him on and he wasn't charged. The police didn't tell Trayvon Martin's father until the next day of his killing even though they had his phone in their hands. Zimmerman walked around for 44 days before he was charged of second degree murder. Even after all the evidence they had to arrest Zimmerman they didn't and in that time the FBI took over the case because the Florida police couldn't handle the case like they were suppose to. There are a lot of feelings that I have when it comes to this case but I feel as if personal feelings should be sent aside so that Trayvon Martin gets justice and that George Zimmerman is locked away for the rest of his life.

Mind. Body. Media.

Despite, being someone who is well aware of what it means to be healthy, I still struggle with maintaining a healthy body image. I understand that being healthy varies from one individual to another. One person's healthy may be another person's unhealthy. Thus, it is important that we as individuals learn what is healthy for us and work towards that. I think that in order to maintain a healthy body image one must change the way that they think as well as learn how to think as an individual. When people use what they see in the media as a guideline for what a healthy body is, they end up with a warped perception of what they should look like.

It bothers me that a lot of what I see on tv are quick fixes for those who are "overweight" or out of shape. No one wants to work to achieve a healthy, in shape body. In my opinion, this way of thought mirrors society's current mentality in a lot of ways. We're making everything faster, easier, and to require less work and effort. We want and have a short cut for everything, so much so that we are missing out on the essence of life and experiences. But I digress. All in all, I think we as people need to challenge ourselves to learn more about who we are and celebrate individuality. Act, dress, look the way we want to, not the way we think we have to.

Positive Body Image

I think body image is a big issue with some young women, and some of them don't have a positive body image. I think this is a big issue because the media puts an unrealistic image of beautiful looking women. For example someone may see something in the media that makes them feel less of themselves.
In this picture she is seeing herself  bigger than what she actually is.
This shows me that the media has her thinking she needs to be a size "0"
in order to be appropriate to society. Positive body image is something that should be dealt with because some things are unrealistic.
The media makes some girls think that wearing makeup all the time and wearing pretty clothes makes you beautiful. Media does these things by playing commercials such as maybeline commercials , having the women look as if they have smooth skin.
As you can see she looks like she has the best skin you can ever have.

Heres another example of how Media distorts reality. It amazes me that technology can make things disappear. It amazes me because in a Jennifer Aniston picture she had glasses and then in the photo on the cover of the magazine she did not have them in her hand.Technology makes people feel that it is easy to get rid of things you dont like. Its not good because people dont represent themselves in that way.

The field trip

On March 24 2012 Girl World on a trip and on this field trip we mate new people and seen how what they did in there group well what I found out was that they would think of little plays and then would record them and show there work to their group or be put on you tube but I had I good time I got to learn something new and use new things and we would like to do it again someday

Love vs.Lust

I think healthy relationship is important because if its not healthy it can cause emotional, physical, and mental problems. The video that we watched show how 2 girls didn't have a healthy relationships with their partner they let the boys use them for sex and the just fell for it.The 2 girl periods end up coming late and they did didn't know what was the problem. But on the other hand the other friend out of the 3 girls took their time with there relationship and got to know each other better.

I thought the scenario was real,it's something that happens in everyday life.I think that women should watch this and learn from it because its very encouraging. It shows what a healthy and unhealthy relationship is like.

Watch All Falls Down on PBS. See more from PBS Online Film Festival.

Sign that you are not in a healthy relationship.

I'm writing about unhealthy relationships because, I have some friends that are in unhealthly relationships so i just wanted to talk about it.

Some signs of bad relationships. checking your cell phone or email without your permission, constantly putting you down , extreme jealousy, explosive temper, isolating you from your family or friends, making false accusations, mood swing, physically hurting you in a way, possessiveness, and telling you what to do. Others should care because they might end up and a unhealthly relationship.

Miss Representation

When I saw the movie Miss representation it really made me think how women are so unappreciated in this world. I feel its wrong what females do to get attention. But at the same time I understand the females because some females feel thats their only way in life and the only way theyll be noticed. I feel it really made me notice a lot of things I never paid attention to. When I saw miss representation I just started to look around and I noticed everything they were talking about how females do a lot for attention.  I feel guys are also the main blame because if they were to show the girls attention who respect themselves then other women would have more respect for them selves.
Hi everyone! My name is Margaret and I work for Alternatives. I will be joining Girl World as another group leader. I look forward to learning about how Girl World works and getting to know each of the group members. Thanks for being so welcoming!

Natalie learning hours

Service learning hours that I did that I think will be useful Is when I was working with children after school. I feel that helps you do things with kids tats age appropiate for children and whats fun for them.
My most memorable community service was when i helped some old ppl that had Alzheimer's and it help me to understand ppl better that's not in the same state of mind as me

What is your most powerful/memorable community service project? What do you think people can learn or get by doing community service?

My most powerful community project is when I served food to the homeless.I think people can get a sense of how it feels to not have all time or what homeless people look like because not all homeless people look dirty.

Community

My favorite community service project was when I was in build on and we went to feed the homeless people and we had to take turns some people was washing the dishes ad and some was pasting out the food we had a lot of fun because it was fun and a good feeling to help people out I had a lot of fun and was hoping to do it again

Community Service

For my community service I worked for best buddies. best buddies is a program at my school that works with autistic kids. I like working with this program because, when I help them I can tell that they are happy, and when other people are happy that makes me happy.

Community Service

Today's Prompt: "What is your most powerful/memorable community service project? What do you think people can learn or gety by doing community service/volunteering?"

One of the most interesting things I've ever done as a volunteer was canvass in Milwaukee for a workers' rights campaign. I think it was interesting to be back in my hometown/state beacuse I moved to Chicago when I turned 18 right about the time when voting and making political decisions were something I could finally participate in. I never really got to participate in making political change in my own city because I was living in a different state, and so it was nice to canvass in Milwaukee, meet people that I might not have otherwise ever met, and promote a cause that I felt was really important.

I think volunteering is something everyone should do when they get the chance because it can give them important life skills especially if it is in a particular profession or area of interest. I know youth who, before studying medicine in college, volunteered as a medical assistant at a hospital. Even if that youth did not do all the things a doctor does, s/he still learned what the climate of a hospital is like, how to interact with doctors, different kinds of hospital vocabularly, and how to deal with patients.  Plus, when all is said and done, your volunteer experience looks great on a resume. Experience, along with who you know, are two of the most crucial (I think) pieces a person needs to get a job -- so if you get the chance to volunteer, take it! :)

Natalie Thoughts

I want to talk about the Travyon Martin situation. I feel terrible about what happened, But what I don’t understand is why this is the only death that's noticed. Little girls raped, young black boys killed for being falsely accused of being in a gang and no one is doing anything about it .Black people are so furious about Travyon Martin's death because he was black. But what about when us black people are killing each other what's the race in that -- when a black person kills a black person. Oh that's usual.  They're always shooting each other and I’m pretty sure its gang related. I don’t really mean that but why does it take a racial situation to happen for us black people to come together and realize that we are more and our voices need to be heard. Coming together is something that we should have been doing. So lets be there for all of these young children that passed 'cause no one deserves to die off of someone else's choice. Whether or not people want for someone to live or not.Im not saying that something is wrong with acknowledging this young boy's death, but I am saying that there are more people dying. Let’s march for everyone.

SO IM IN GIRL WORLD CHILLIN NOW.MY BREAK WAS DECO WENT TO WORK AND DID A LIL HOUSE CLEANING NOTHIN MAJOR BUT I JUST WANTED TO UPDATE ND LET YALL NOW IM GOOD AND AHH I GOT A NEW BOO SO I'LL SEE HOW THIS NEW CUTIE WILL WORK OUT. KISSES

What are you saying when you say goo-goo?
I dont speak that language just because I am a baby
does not mean that I dont speak english.
why are you stereotyping me im just a baby
relax.
people stereotype too much.
what are you saying??
what i am saying is stop being so quick to judge

.-some people qive up on there relationship because of what they here &what people say..

Miss Rep video

Well my name is Adriana in Girl world we seen a movie call miss representation and in this movie they were talking about how the media talk about women and the way they should look and the size they should be and some people end up hurting their self because they don’t like the way they look or how people see them so they end up taking drug just so they can be that prefect women a size 5 pretty and always have to show her body. I and if a girl want to do a sport she have to be half naked men don’t really care about women in the world they think that they not strong and can’t do nothing but stay home and cook and clean but what people really need to know is that you can do what you want and be who you want and show that women can have power as much as men’s
my weekend was so fun i had njoy myself if i could i would do it all over agan.

Positive self-Image of yourself

Hi my name is Adriana. W and I’m just going to talk about who I am and then go into my blog post. As I said my name is Adriana, and I’m in the 12th grade.  I have been in girl world 2.0 since the end of last year and this year also.
Today I’m going to talk about Positive self-Image. Today in the world a woman or a teen girl has to look a certain kind of way for a person to say they look nice. Today’s women’s and teen girls have to wear make-up or wear some kind out-fit that makes their bottom look big or their chest show, but what they should know is that they don’t need to do all of this for other people. They need to be themselves. You don’t need to be America’s next top model, and you don’t have to be in a size 1 or 2 just to get somebody to know you or tell you that you are not sexy because you not a 1 or 2. You are who you are, not what somebody what you to be. You don’t need make-up or to be that perfect size. You are beautiful you are just the way you look and you should proud of yourself because I know I am. :)

Spring Break 2012

Girl World may not have met this week, but that doesn't mean that the Girl World Philosophy shuts down. This week we challenged ourselves to stay conscious of our goals such as healthy lifestyles, community and positive relationships by doing a few simple activities.

Here were the challenges:

Healthy Lifestyles - spend the week practicing one of your “10 small things” to make your day better physically/emotionally/spiritually...
Positive Relationships - take a picture with someone who makes you feel happy ...
Positive Self-Image -  take a picture of your favorite part about YOU!
Community Awareness– Take a picture in front of your favorite neighborhood spot…

One of the things I am trying to do to live healthier is finding ways to reduce stress. I think Yoga is a great way to do that. Even if you are not great at the varying stretches and techniques that are used in Yoga, the following is easy and only requires lying on the floor and doing a pose called "The Corpse". It's very relaxing, and you can use it to relieve stress, or, like another of my goals, to meditate on being thankful for another day.

Over Spring Break, I also went home to Milwaukee, and it reminded me of my positive/healthy relationships. My nephew is one person who always makes me feel super happy to be home. He's just a really good kid and nice to everyone all around. Here's a picture!

This picture is from two years ago because I forgot to bring my camera with me when I went home. :(

For positive self-image, I didn't take a favorite picture of me or part of me...but I like me eyes. They can be both a blessing and a curse because I am usually very honest in my experssion. People can tell when I'm upset or sad, but it also means that people can trust me because they can tell that I'm not someone who is lying to them.

Finally for the community part of our Spring Break challenge, I wrote about my favorite place in Uptown, and it is by far Inspiration Kitchen. It used to be called Cafe Too, but they have changed things up just a little bit in terms of their menu and schedule -- but it is still the same by means of its mission which is to help Chicago's homeless get back up on their feet. Their slogan is Dine Well Do Good, and that's exactly how I feel when I go there. :) They have the best goat cheese salad, and Ann, one of the servers there is always super nice.

Negative body image -- adult women are not immune

"Real women are fat.  And thin.  And both, and neither, and otherwise.  Doesn’t make them any less real." -- Hanne Blank  -- author on body image and identity.

I copied this quote from a blog on Feministing.com called "There's no right way to hate your body" by Chloe Angyal. It got me thinking because this sounds like a reminder that I have to give myself any time I start to doubt my self worth based on my physical appearances. I wonder how many girls out there feel this way -- to have to remind themselves of their beauty. Even though I'm sure many do, when do we become aware of this feeling, and does it ever go away?

Chloe's post, and I really encourage you to read it, focuses a lot on how we all tend to hate our bodies. We all do it to varying degrees depending on we identify ourselves, but regardless of our backgrounds (and it's your background that may have a lot to do with that degree to which we find ways to hate our body), we all find ways to hate our bodies. That said, the quote above hit me in the face because I again found myself conscious of doing my own body hating yesterday.

Sometimes I think that I should really know better, and maybe find a way to prepare myself for it, because walking into a fashionable boutique is no easy feat. I love to go shopping, and I enjoy edgy fashion as much as anyone else who appreciates Vogue magazine's latest trends, but I find that being fashionable is something of a talent if you are "bigger" like myself. I don't think I am fat -- well maybe a little but only because I don't think I'm thin either. I'm kind of thick, I've got big hips like many of the women in my family, and I suppose I could be more fit (I used to be very fit -- which might help contribute to my self-bashing.) But I feel this way a lot when I go shopping and the store doesn't offer sizes that will fit me.

The weirdest thing happens at stores like this. For instance, I become suddenly aware that my"muffin top" is spilling over my jeans, or that my rear end is 100x bigger than I thought it was when I look in the mirror by the fitting rooms. I soon realize full well that none of the clothes in that store are going to fit me. I don't know what to say, and I'm too embarrassed to ask because the sizes on the racks already hint at a subtle "you really don't belong here." The worst part, though, is when you feel as though the store clerks are see you. Their job is to help you shop, and you suddenly wish they hadn't noticed you, because you just want to get to the door and make a clean escape before they give you their perky and polite, "hello!" I get really uncomfortable if I've been spotted, because I think it'd be a mess if they did try to "help" me. It'd be quite the quest to help me put together similar outfits with what they have to offer a girl like me.

So...not only did I wish I was smaller to fit into the cute outfits, I also got this crazy idea -- thankfully it was only momentary -- that I must go on a diet. It was the justification that, "if I can't beat 'em, then join 'em" and then maybe I could actually shop at the stores I think I like. Terrible, I know. After a few minutes, it felt more like a submission to my own self-hatred than a good idea.I figured out really quick that I wasn't going to be doing it for me, but rather for someone who makes the stupid clothes. I'd be trying to measure up to someone else's standards instead of my own. Thankfully I figured that out, because really what's the point? If I'm going to diet, first and foremost, I should be doing it  for the right reasons. I should be making sure to eat good food so that I'm taking care of my heart, and maybe trying to be a little more fit would help me stay active for longer periods of time which will also keep me healthy. But if I diet for the wrong reasons, and even if I can buy clothes from that cute little boutique, I'm sure I would find other ways to hate the wonderful body I've been given to live in day to day. Besides, I'm more than just my curves and "muffin top", right?

There's no right way to hate your body, but there's also no wrong way to love it either. And as much as I love fashionable clothes, I also love being able to ride my bike to work, to walk to the lake, to laugh, to write, to take pictures, and go new places. My body, whether I like it or not is my number one partner when I do these things, so...I just hope that in moments like the one I had at the store yesterday, I'll remember to think about the reasons to love me. I hope you'll find ways to love who you are, too. Let us know why you love you below!
